Hey folks, Saturday at 10:30 is the first NCHCA clean-up of the spring. Meet at CH Coffee between 10:30 and 12 to find equipment.
At the same time, folks will be meeting at the de facto dog park at 11th and Park Road to clean up the space and discuss organizing to maintain and improve the space going forward. |

(1) NCHCA is having a massive (and long overdue, weather has not been cooperative) spring clean-up May 30 from 10-12, in conjunction with Prince of Petworth. At the same time, there is a dedicated clean-up and organizational meeting for a new friends group dedicated to maintaining and improving the small dog park space on 11th and Park Road. I STRONGLY encourage all regular users of that park to attend and get involved, as that space will soon be in rough shape without a lot of TLC.
(2) I would love to recruit a new board member (say, Vice President) to the NCHCA with creative ideas for community projects.
(3) After this clean-up, we are going to start a monthly clean-up schedule coordinated with the NWCHCA and Tivoli North Business Association. We start at 11th and Park and fan out from there, and they are focused more on the northwest portion of the region, so hopefully we can more or less meet in the middle. Clean-ups will take place on the third Saturday of every month, same bat time, same bat channel, so mark your calendars now.
(4) The next NCHCA meeting will be on Wednesday, July 1. The topic will be community service organizations and community building events / festivals. If you would like to speak at the meeting, or know of an organization doing good work in the area who would like to, please touch base with me. Confirmed speakers so far will discuss this fall's Latino Festival and Columbia Heights Day.
(5) In addition to the clean-ups, I am looking for one additional periodic neighborhood community service project that could attract a wide range of local, sporadic (or regular) volunteers. If folks have ideas, again, please let me know. This will be one topic of discussion at the July meeting.
Many thanks! |

Thanks to the huge group of volunteers who showed up, a HUGE amount of trash was cleaned off the streets and sidewalks.
If anyone has any genius ideas about how to STOP some of the trash from being deposited in the first place, I'm listening ... |

Sorry I couldn't make it, pregnant wife issues. But I did see the massive pile of trash, very impressive! Kudos to the community members who participated.
As for how to make all the trash stop, that's a tough one. There seems to be two contingents of residents here. Those who want a clean neighborhood and those who prefer squalor. Literally I have sat on my front steps and watched kids finish a drink and the can falls from their hand to the sidewalk and they think nothing of it. I make a comment, they curse at me, yadda yadda. I think until that culture of thinking its ok to trash your surroundings stops, these cleanups will continue to be necessary. _________________ Adam Aaronson
