Moving to the neighborhood in the next month or so. What restaurants are in the area? I know there is a subway up on 14th, and I have read that Wonderland Ballroom is decent too. Anything else in the immediate area?

I'd recommend El Rinconcito Dos on Park Road across from the Giant, for Salvadoran food in a pleasant, spacious dining room. There's the new Franklin's Deli on 11th, and Columbia Heights Coffee has some food items on the menu. For Chinese takeout, I like Eastern Empire on 14th between Columbia and Irving. Not too many other sit-down restaurants at this point, though. When in the mood for something a little fancier, we walk over to Mt. Pleasant Street or Adams-Morgan.

I'll second the recommendation for El Rinconito II at Park and Holmead...great food.

On Mt. Pleasant Street, my favorite place is Radius, which makes pretty good pizza, and Tonic is right next door. Across the street, Dos Gringos has sandwiches, coffee, tea, and ice cream in the summer. El Pollo Sabroso has delicious chicken, fried yucca, and pupusas. There are several places to get pupusas, and Heller's Bakery is always good.

My sons and I tried Franklin's Deli yesterday, and I recommend it to anyone looking for tasty, inexpensive, fry-cook food. The coffee is pretty dreadful, but we got a cheesesteak sandwich and it was delicious. The proprietors were very friendly and did not seem to mind two 17-month-olds running about while they prepared the sandwich.

Because the site where Franklin's is was "in the works" for so long, it is rather hard to tell it is open if you don't already know, so I hope folks will stop by and encourage this new business.

And certainly try Temperance Hall on Georgia Ave and Domku on Upshur.

I wrote food reveiws for both that are in the entertainment section of this website.

Temperance is more of a bar atmosphere and is just building up a menu, but Domku has a really terrific menu--breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm finding it's the place I want to eat out when I start going through my mental list of near-by places.

(btw, I have no stock in the place...am truly an adoring fan). If you haven't tried it yet, don't wait.

This bit of permiting news from the eastern border of CH:

Newton Variety Store, 3512 Georgia Ave NW. Conversion of a retail
store to a restaurant. Cost: $24,000.

At that low of a cost, it can't be a very ambitious project. Anyone know any details?

Haydee's is my favorite restaurant in Mount Pleasant; Salvadorean and Mexican. It's a fun place, fine food, great atmosphere, low prices.

Pollo Sabroso offers superb roast chicken (Peruvian), sit-down or carry-out.

Don Juan's has a good carry-out kitchen (Salvadorean) with an entrance separate from the restaurant, which might be a little rough for non-Salvadoreans.

Ercilia's is another good Salvadorean-Mexican carry-out.

Corado's offers Guatemalan specialties. Next door is Burritos Fast, which offers the obvious. Adjacent to that is a Chinese-Korean carry-out, which I haven't tried since they changed ownership.

La Paz has very good Salvadorean food, but is a bit spartan, and you may be at a disadvantage if you can't manage some Spanish.

Dos Gringos is good for American light fare. Tonic is American food, quite child-friendly. Radius, across the hall, offers pizza.

The Marx Cafe is a night-life sort of place. Ownership has changed recently, so its offerings may change.

Heller's is our famous bakery. It was once a true German bakery, but the Hellers left some years ago, and now the bakery is operated by a pair of Greek brothers. Great for coffee and pastries.

There's a lot to choose from in Mount Pleasant, and I'd say that all of our restaurants are worth a try. You'll find something you like, and it'll take you weeks to sample everything.

Here is a link to a pretty lengthy discussion of dining options in our other neighbor, Petworth, from the Petworth blog:

I haven't tried it yet, but I have one bit of information. The Carvel Ice Cream store on 14th Street is supposed to open on Friday, 5/26, just in time for the Memorial Day weekend. Mmm, soft-serve...

The Carvel store was open yesterday (Friday). Apparently it will be open until 9PM on weeknights and 10PM on weekends for those looking for something cool. Service was very friendly!

I went this weekend. Excellent pupusas and burritos, super cheap, very friendly owner. Music is a tad loud, but they will turn it down if you ask. Spanish skills may come in handy here, but are not crucial.

No air conditioning yet. They will do take out if you ask nicely.

Ok those of you who talk about supporting small business on 11th street, GO TO THIS PLACE!

i recently ate at 2 places right by the petworth area i had never been to, both were delicious (both for meals well under $10). i guess both of these might technically be considered petworth although im going to say that there is a gray area and it is only half a mile from the tivoli giant area. the first is called sweet mango cafe and is right at the intersection of georgia and new hampshire. if you like caribbean/jamaican food then you will like this place. the second is temperance hall. other people have mentioned it here, but i just wanted to second the positive review. super friendly staff, nice atmosphere and overall pretty great for a neighborhood bar/restaurant. the wings were good, but nothing special, just good wings, but the grilled cheese is amazing. fancy bread, fancy cheese, fancy bacon if you want, with a delicious salad on the side, and the hummus order is HUGE. the waiter even offered to bring more bread when it was finished except for a massive pile of hummus left on the plate. i love the fact that they sell a fancy black angus hot dog as well as mini sloppy joes for an appetizer. you guys should definitely check both of these places out.
