Of course you are missing my point. I came over to this group from the Yahoo! Columbia Heights group to get away from all of your critical postings. As you are well aware, most people have a negative opinion of your posts and that should tell you something right there.

Why did you have to hijack this group too? I liked this group when it was full of positive things about the neighborhood and people shared good things with each other. I knew you were here when the same style of posts started appearing from bronat as William Jordan. Do you look for groups to hijack?

I mean, c'mon. Please stay over on the Yahoo! group and let this group alone. I know you won't, but it is worth a shot to ask you again. You think you have a civic duty as some kind of watchdog, but it just turns people off. If you are so concerned about how things should be run, then run for mayor and don't subject us to yet another negative posting from Bronat.

Sure there are some who don't want to hear a different view point, and anything outside of group think is seen as negative.

The real issue is persons such as yourself are often to willing to lower the standards/objectives/vision for the redevelopment of Columbia Heights for convenience sake. I'm not sure why, maybe its easier to be satisfied with second best/"better than a vacant lot" then to do the work it takes to reach higher, better and broader goals. Let's say everythting is fine so we can burry our heads and ignore the work to be done.

It's not a "different viewpoint" Bronat, the fact of the matter is you're obsessed with gentrification issues and you won't permit anyone else to have a conversation about other topics without chiming in with your old, tired cliches as in the last paragraph of your post above. You've been obsessively parroting the same NIMBY line for years. You haven't persuaded anyone of your views in the process - as far as I can tell you only have one supporter here, and very few on the Yahoo listserv. You must realize that your endless ranting, thread hijacking, and excessive posting turns would-be allies of yours into enemies. Your tone and frequency drive people mad, and each time you hit that "submit" button you probably cost yourself a few more votes in the next ANC election.

D.C. adds nearly 10,000 residents

D.C. added nearly 9,600 residents from July 2008 to July 2009 — the city’s largest annual gain since World War II.

D.C.’s population now stands at almost 600,000 residents, according to recently-released estimates by the U.S. Census Bureau.

“These gains reflect a significant vote of confidence that the District of Columbia is moving in the right direction,” said Mayor Adrian Fenty, who announced the population boost on Thursday. “This kind of growth will only continue as more people see how we are working to improve our schools, provide more transportation options and build healthier, safer, more vibrant neighborhoods.”

D.C. has added almost 28,000 residents since 2000, when it had 572,000 people. When Mayor Anthony Williams began his second term, in January 2003, he set a goal of adding 100,000 new residents to the city within 10 years — a pace of 10,000 per year.

Growth can be attributed to various factors, including new births and residents relocating to D.C. from other states and overseas.

Texas gained more people (478,000) than any other state during the year, followed by California (381,000), North Carolina (134,000), Georgia (131,000) and Florida (114,000), according to Census estimates.

The official 2010 Census population counts will be released next December.

D.C. started an awareness campaign to encourage residents to participate in the 2010 Census, in order to keep an accurate count of the city’s residents. The Census helps determine the distribution of more than $400 billion in federal funding for community programs.

District Council Hands Out Tax Breaks to Developers

Today, the District Council approved three bills that would exempt several developers from property taxes throughout the city, with one exemption lasting indefinitely. Yup. Indefinitely. Councilmembers were handing out tax abatements like candy at a parade to Affordable Housing Opportunities Inc., Neighborhood Development Company, and Donatelli Development. The tax abatements come in exchange for residential developments that provide housing at affordable levels in communities ranging from Georgia Avenue to Columbia Heights, Congress Heights to Naylor Road. Though abatements are often offered as a preemptive tool to encourage affordable housing, the Donatelli project delivered last July; the abatement in this case softens the blow of a major condo development that turned rental when the financial headwinds were too strong.

Donatelli's Park Place, which opened atop the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro station last summer boasting 156 rental apartments and 5 rowhouses, offered 20% of the units to low-income tenants. Park Place is a $71 million, 200,000 square-foot housing and retail project. The abatement begins FY 2009 and exempts the developer from property taxes for the next 10 years and increases by 10% for the years 11 through 20 until the point at which the developer is paying full property taxes. In 20 years. Though, according to Brian DeBose, Communications Director for Councilmember Jim Graham, this is the an unusual request from Donatelli, whose projects have consistently set aside affordable housing, without any expectation of tax abatement. Graham saw fit to support the developer, a DC resident, and to "better advantage the building" during an economic downturn.
