Help Bring Whole Foods Market To Columbia Heights!

Whole Foods MarketWould you like Whole Foods Market to come to Columbia Heights?  You can join our campaign to bring Whole Foods Market to the DC USA retail complex!  The best way for you to voice your support for Whole Foods is to email Karen Riley at karen.riley@wholefoods.com.  Karen Riley is the real estate coordinator for Whole Foods Market.  She can demonstrate the level of our support directly to the Whole Foods team working on the negotiations.  Please be as descriptive as you can in your emails.  Please also cc or bcc your emails to Ms. Riley to us at info@columbiaheightsnews.org.  We need to keep a running tally of how many messages have been sent to Whole Foods Market so we can gage how much more work we need to do.  The more people who can email Whole Foods Market the more powerful our collective voices will be!  It looks like we are facing an uphill battle but as a community we can make a difference!  Please spread the word!

Whole Foods MarketSince we first began looking into whether Whole Foods Market was planning to open a location in the DC USA retail complex we have received many emails in support of Whole Foods coming to Columbia Heights.  You can read the excerpts from some of the feedback that we received below.

Whole Foods Market Supporters

"YES, BOTH MY HUSBAND AND I ADAMANTLY SUPPORT WHOLE FOODS IN COLUMBIA HEIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Giant is a disgusting store, but because they are in the neighborhood, we don't shop at Whole Foods as often as we did.  If WFs opened in this neighborhood they would have our complete attention and undoubtedly gain more business from us because we could easily stop there to buy dinner on our way home from work!"

"I am very interested in having this Whole Foods in the neighborhood, and would be happy to contribute any time to a campaign to make it happen."

"I, [name], resident of Columbia Heights fully support Whole Foods arriving in our neighborhood. I'm tired of poor customer service and poor quality healthy food/cheese/produce selection at the new Giant. I would make it a point to get my "luxury" items at the new Whole Foods if they were in the neighborhood."

"I am very interested in having this Whole Foods in the neighborhood, and would be happy to contribute any time to a campaign to make it happen."

"I would LOVE to have a Whole Foods in CH!  Before moving to CH, we lived within walking distance of a whole foods and did much of our shopping there.  The Whole Foods at Logan Circle is a bit too far for us to walk there, and parking is often too difficult to make a trip there pleasant or worthwhile.  We've had to leave a couple times because the parking garage was too crowded - not to mention the inside of the actual store.  We wholeheartedly support a whole foods coming in to CH - let me know if there's anything else we can do to sway them!"

"ABSOLUTELY WOULD LOVE THEM IN CH!!!!"

"I would be very supportive of Whole Foods coming to Col. Hghts."

"REALLY want them; spend a lot of money for our family of 5 at P Street and Tenly."

"Let's to do all we can to help bring them to Columbia Hts.  Let me know if I can help..."

"...Before the Columbia Heights Giant opened, I used to do all of my gocery shopping at the Logan Whole Foods. However, I now simply do not feel like driving that far to shop and use the Giant, even though my prefered store is clearly Whole Foods with it excellent organic selections and superior fresh fish and meat.
I say this to illustrate the importance of proximity in grocery shopping. If a Whole Foods was located in Columbia Heights, I would use it. I also think this true of many living in the 14th and 16th Street corridors.
Additionally, the Logan WF is often very crowded and will be certainly become more of a mob scene in the near future when numerous condo developments in its vicinity are completed. When that influx arrives, I suspect that many of us who drive (or used to drive) to the Logan store on our way home from work will cease doing so. Another Whole Foods in Columbia Heights will allieve this overcrowding in Logan. Consdiering this, coupled with the massive residential development underway in Columbia Heights, proompts me to believe that a new Whole Foods in Columbia Heights would be a huge success."

"I am a strong advocate for having a new Whole Foods store in Columbia Heights.  As a Dupont Circle transplant, I truly miss being able to walk to Whole Foods on P Street.  Unfortunately, it's just not worth it to travel down to P Street, though I think the food and service is superior to that of the new Giant.
What can we do as a community to show our support to Whole Foods?  If the survey proves positive..."

"We are all very interested in bringing Whole Foods to Columbia Heights and would be pleased to sign a petition."

"...I just saw the news about Whole Foods possibly coming into our neighbourhood.  I am very interested in such an opportunity, hence please let me know if I can help in anyway possible."

"Responding to the announcement in the Columbia Heights on-line news. Definitely would LOVE a Whole foods nearby. Whom should I (and my spouse and neighbors) write to? Thank you!"

"I whole-heartedly support Whole Foods opening a store in Columbia Heights and will do anything I can to help make that happen. Please don't hesitate to contact me if there is anything I can do to help with the effort."

"The Giant is terrific; but if we could get Whole Foods in our own backyard, I would be absolutely tickled pink!"

"I would support Whole Foods coming to Columbia Heights. . . Right now I go to the Whole Foods on P Street, NW.  I am sure that we need another Whole Foods in this area one reason is because when you go to the Whole Foods on P Street, traffic is always extremely congested and the lines are very long.  I think if we had a Whole Foods in Columbia Heights I would shop there, but I think that it would also take away some of the congestion and you would get served quicker."

"We support Whole Foods locating a store at the DC USA complex at the 14th & Irving Shopping Center...Please let me know if we can sign a petition or do anything else to further the cause."

"Thank you for your efforts in making Whole Foods a reality for our community. Let us know if there's any other way that we can help beside the poll. Can we sent letters to their headquarters? Or do a similar market study to that one done on the P st area....? Not only are we near new and upcoming neighborhoods that extends all the way to Brookland, but the Whole Food would also be minutes away from the Connecticut Heights and Woodley Park neighborhoods as well."

"Yes!  Yes!  Walking to a market with healthy food would be great!"

More Opinions

"Beside pleading for a Wholefoods, what can we do to bring quality retail for DC USA, from the tentative lease list, it doesn't look very promising. Can we ask stores to consider DC USA location? It couod be either independent or chain mall stores."

"I'm not sure if you want dissentions or not, but I'd much rather have something like Trader Joe's, which I see as a complement to Giant, than a Whole Foods--or something that is not groceries at all."

"To be frank, if I am going to put my energy into a petition, I'd rather see Trader Joe's.  We already have the Whole Foods at P, not so far away.  And Trader Joe's is more affordable than WFs, but still has a good selection of organic and other specialty items."

More Discussion

In addition to these comments there has been much discussion about Whole Foods Market and other potential grocery retailer for the DC USA site in the Yahoo! Columbia Heights listserv.  You can also read comments in our petition.
