Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

DC USA Floor PlanWe got a hold of the updated floor plans for the DC USA retail complex which include the latest tenant makeup and the available spaces that remain.  Regardless of which retailer ends up in the space carved out for Whole Foods Market, we think the updated plans provide a good reminder of the strength of the retailers that have already committed to DC USA - especially the anchors (Target, Washington Sports Club, Bed Bath and Beyond, Best Buy, Staples).

The plans also indicate that about a dozen spaces are still available for prospective retailers, not including the space originally designated for Whole Foods Market.  The remaining spaces range in size between 895 400 to almost 10,000 square feet.  If you have a particular retailer that you would like to see in one of those spaces, make your voices heard.

looks like the smallest available space is actually 400 square feet, on the first floor right south of lane bryant.

Would you mind listing who's who? The floor plan is so small that's its a litte difficult to read.

Desi's... well, I guess more fried chicken is always in demand..

What is Rainbow?

Wow... that's a pretty random assortment of some disappointing retail.

Kind of reminds me of those suburban shopping malls in decline... the malls where the teenage gangs hang out. NOT looking forward to this.

Rainbow is a low/moderate-end middle-of-the-road women's clothing store. I've never been but there's one in the Prince George's Plaza mall, which seems to be what DC USA is being modeled after based on the tenants to date.

Yeah, this stinks.

My optimism for DC is fading fast. Just another example of settling for something less than ideal, just because this city is so used to it. It will never get better here until people start to think differently about what deserve and demanding it.

This reminds me of the terrible strip in Adams Morgan, with the Payless and the Foot Locker. Exactly what we are getting here.

As I have mentioned before, until the population exists that provides a market for higher-end/boutique stores, these stores will not move in here and take the risk. Last I heard, Kenyon Square and Highland Park (the two big complexes on top of the Metro) are not sold out. Until those few hundred $500K+ condos are filled and occupied, the real demand for nicer retail just won't be there.

Hopefully we'll see some better retail then - and hopefully all the open retail spots in DCUSA and the other areas (Allegro, 11th St, etc) won't be filled with chain garbage by then.

The delivery date on that PDF (Oct 2006) says Summer 2007.

I agree. But the question is, what, is anything, can we do about it? Maybe nothing, but I figure it's worth a shot. I have emailed someone at DC USA (see my email at Whole Food or Ross?). No response yet, but I'd still encourage others to do the same. If you know of any desirable stores that might be interested, email the owners of those stores. Also try Jim Graham, since he has hyped up his role in getting DC USA off the ground -- I doubt he wants his contituents to all be pretty displeased with the end results. And since the project is benefiting from the public largesse, shouldn't the public have some say in what the end result will be? I think the only way to have any shot of improving the situation is to have lots of folks sending lots of calls and emails to folks on both the supply, demand, and government end of the equation, harassing them enough to the point where they at least consider what retailers folks might actually want to patronize.

If Whole Foods isn't coming, is there any chance of getting a Trader Joes?

TJ's is likely going into a building at like 14th and W or so. If that's the case, I doubt we'll see one up here less than 10 blocks away.
