Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

The Children's PlaceWe received word from Drew Greenwald, president of Grid Properties, that two retailers have recently signed lease agreements with DC USA:  The Children's Place and Desi's.

The Children's Place is a clothing retailer for children, ages newborn to ten years old.  Here is a description from its website:

The Children’s Place Retail Stores, Inc., is a leading specialty retailer of children’s merchandise, ages newborn to ten years old. The Company designs, contracts to manufacture and sells high-quality, value-priced merchandise under the proprietary “The Children’s Place” and licensed “Disney Store” brand names. As of October 28, 2006, the Company owned and operated 851 The Children’s Place stores and 331 Disney Stores in North America and its online store, www.childrensplace.com.

Desi's is a locally owned, Peruvian chicken and steak place.

When we requested updates about the prospect Ellwood Thompson's coming to DC USA, Greenwald responded with this:

We do not comment on ongoing negotiations but they are an exciting concept that we are exploring along with various options.

Peter Mallios of Newmark Knight Frank, the leasing agent for DC USA, was equally mum about Ellwood Thompson's.  Mallios informed us that he is no longer allowed to speak with after the backlash from the whole Ross Dress for Less.  See Whole Foods Or Ross?  This is unfortunate as Mallios had been so informative.  But perhaps this means Ross is backing out?  We will keep you updated as we learn more.
