Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

Allegro Retail

The street-level retail portion of the Allegro residential development is being brokered by JBG Rosenfeld.  Two fairly large spaces are being advertised:  2,704 and 3,400 square feet.

The 6,104 total square feet of retail is quite a bit larger than the total retail space figure of 3,000 sq. ft. we were told a year ago.

According to JBG Rosenfeld's promotional literature, "All spaces are divisible and have wide sidewalks suitable for outdoor seating."

For more information please visit JBG Rosenfeld's website.  You can also read their promotional literature for Allegro Retail in pdf format.

Worse than the stab n grab!

Great complete with cots for drunks and a waiting room for dealers - I mean benches.

Seriously, this is by far the worst thing being built in the heights. We know allegro does not have enough parking for the rental units so now the businesses will help kill more parking in the area.

And where will the business load and unload their deliveries - oh right in the alley where the entrance to the parking is going.

We get all the downsides of the old Giant and the extra headache of the apartments.

are there no parking spaces in allegro at all?? i like that their sidewalk accomadates for outdoor seating - but who wants to sit outside and dine in front of a huge funeral home?
Allegro's retail succes is pivotal!
Written by Concerned for CH on 2008-03-01 20:44:24
Allegro is positioning itself to play a pivotal role in the further development of northern Columbia Heights.

With outdoor seating, this place would do well with outdoor cafes much like you see when you exit the Woodly Park/Zoo/Adam's Morgan metro station. Plus, the places across the street and further north look like they have HUGE potential for being restaurants and cafes themselves! They are built exactly as the ones in Woodley Park.

Any developers reading this? You would do well developing the area around Allegro after the Woodley Park model. I'm excited for the potential and welcome some quality restaurants, bars and cafes to the area!
Concerned about funeral home and parking
Written by on 2008-03-04 14:43:13
I was excited to see the big empty lot go away, but I'm now very concerned about the parking situation in the area.

Also, it's great that they're planning for outdoors retail space in Allegro but as long as there is a GIANT FUNERAL home across the street I don't see a lot of success in that.

I'm actually very surprised to see the funeral home expand at the same time that these apartments are built. Is the Allegro developer going to highlight the funeral home in the local amenities list? "And don't miss the great view of a beautiful and recently renovated funeral home right from your apartment!" Who wouldn't want to miss that...?

People do die and have to be taken care off. Funeral homes are HARDLY a major concern or a problem in CH. Quite the contrary, the appear to perform a useful social function.

at the moment it seems that there are more funeral homes in Columbia Heights then there are decent restaurants. i think that when Columbia Heights was a nothing neighborhood with a reputation for gang violence the funeral homes seemed to make sense. it would be really nice to see some of these bussinesses cash in and move to a less congested area. it might even make sense for them to move as they do require street parking which will not be as easy. i was actually surprised to see the one across from Allegro expand into the empty lot it bordered. That could've been great spot for a Borders or Barnes & Nobel.

I think the plan with outdoor seating sounds great. what will need work is EVERYTHING across the street. You'd think the huge funeral home would cash in on the location and move. They have a business that people will follow them wherever they go. Also, It seems like we have more funeral homes then anywhere.
RIP Historic Architecture
Written by Geezer on 2008-03-13 09:14:45
Not mention that the funeral home expansion "blocked over the facade of an absolutely beautiful, early 20th century, Italianate-Flemish building, replete with a red-tiled roof. I recognize that such complaints might be considered "classist" by some, but the wanton destruction of such timeless architectural beauty is truly an outrage to me.

It really is completely outrageous that a bussiness that has been in this community would not recogonize that their own building was infact a beautiful and historic part of the community. From the look of what their doing, it seems like they are creating a low-budget ugly montrosity. Why are they allowed to disregard the beauty and character of 14th at at such a pivital time - and how are they able to get away with it so close to the DC USA. It really is completey outrageous. Their origial building was truely one of the nicest pieces of architecture on 14th street. Why has there been nobody in the community mobilizing people to stop this. Have they actually been give permits for this thoughtless destruction that damages the character of our neighborhood.

For good or bad, CH is NOT classified as a historic neighborhood. Theferore, they are not required to preserve the historic facades. Would have been very nice of course.

But to day dream that an empty lot on 14th St. would all of sudden be built on by Barnes and Noble or Borders is just hilarious. Wake up already.
