Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

REIWe just received word that REI, a national outdoor adventure retailer, is pursuing a location at the DC USA.  From what we understand, REI is vying for the same retail space that Whole Foods Market gave up and Ross Dress For Less is now negotiating with developers for.

This is an exciting new development for Columbia Heights and the entire District.  A major outdoor adventure retailer is badly needed in the District.  The only such store that comes to mind is Hudson Trail Outfitters in Tenley Circle.  It would be all the sweeter if such a store opens in our neighborhood.  If REI does come to the DC USA, it would be the first location in DC.   Currently, the closest REI location is in Falls Church, VA.  We know a number of DC outdoor adventurers who make regular pilgrimages to that location.

We will try to bring you more information and find the best way for those of you interested in REI to show your support.

For more information about REI, you can visit its website at REI.com.

This is amazing news. If anyone can let us know who to email/call to show our support for this, I'd appreciate it.

ehhh, i'd rather have a ross
ross?

but you already get a marshall's... isn't that the exact same store with a different name?

Rather have Ross?? Well, I guess it's a matter of taste/needs. But as Mad Clamor said, Marshall's has similar selection.

Anyway, I too would like to know REI's email so that we can start "lobbying" for it. :-)

REI, I'm a loyal member and If you are reading this blog, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, please set up shop in DC USA. My wife and I would also like to know how to support this fantastic idea.
What about Ellwood Thompson's?

Is this the same spot that Ellwood Thompson's is vying for? If so, we need another grocery store BEFORE another retailer. Everyone knows in CH, and it's written all over the comments section on this site, that our community is in dire need for an alternative to the overcrowded and poor quality Giant.

CH13th, check the forum discussion. According to an email from Ellwood's rep, it is not the same space but the one next door to what Ellwood is looking at. According to them it is the same space that Whole Foods was considering and that Ross is now interested in.

Obviously, I agree with you on your general point.

I agree that REI would be much better than Ross, especially with Marshall's already signed on...but Ellwood's is still at the top of my wish list (different space or no).

This is great news! It would be fantastic if REI comes to DC USA as well as Ellwood Thompson's! I've lived in CH for close to 6 years now and have been waiting and waiting for the DC USA complex to open... only to become disenfranchised to hear that both Marshall's and Ross were considering moving in... both stores I do not frequent. We don't need 2 off-price retailers in the same building! We need diversity so that everyone can feel comfortable shopping and living in the neighborhood. Without diversity, you get discrimination and all of the negative things that come with that. I also do NOT shop at the Giant because the service is extremely poor. (I do, however, order monthly from PeaPod, Giant's food delivery service) and the service is excellent. I am ecstatic to hear that such diversity is on it's way and can't wait for more negotiations to take place. However, I don't ever want to be embarassed to say... "Yeah, I own a house next to the Ross & the Marshall's & the McDonald's & the Liquor Store & the corner that has the highest reported crime in the city. I'd much rather be bragging and say "Yeah, I live next to the REI, the Starbuck's, Hank's Oyster Bar, PotBelly, the Ellwood Thompson's Organic Grocery Store, The Heights (thank goodness that place opened!), etc...

What can we do to show our support? An REI in this neighborhood would be a great addition. We are excited about the idea.
