Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

DC USAAn official website for the DC USA retail complex has been launched.  It does not have much more information about the project than what we have already reported here, but it is somewhat more informative than the web pages previously published by the DC USA developers.  Hopefully they will keep it updated as they sign new retailers.

You can visit the webiste here:  DC USA.  They provide an email where you can send questions:  .  As far as we know, DC USA is scheduled to open March 2008.

Here are some DC USA info pages from the development partners:

Joke website

What a joke website. I can't believe how lousy the site's quality is. This is for a development project that will hopefully generate hundreds of millions of dollars a year in revenue and it looks like something a high school junior made for their intro to web class.

Agreed. One would hope for a more comprehensive site, with updates on leases and tenants, place for feedback, etc.

But there is no motivation to do it. They will get their tenants, so why help the community?

This is why we are getting a Target and Best Buy, then a slew of useless retail that doesnt cater to the local community. Shame, but it's the reality. CH is turning into a chain store mecca. Really a disapointment for all of us that moved here with high aspirations.

Also - I guess the saving grace in all this is that there are a number of retail spots in DCUSA that are still open, as well as a bunch on 11th St, up 14th St, and in Allegro. Hopefully some better retail comes in those spots.

Indeed. And those already there or confirmed to come are not _all_ bad. E.g. Sticky Fingers, the gellato place that is coming, Rumberos, Mayorga Coffee, d'Vines wine store, the Heights, CH Coffee, Red Rocks, Red Derby, a couple of higher end beaty parlors/spas..

And I don't mind some of the chain retailers either, like Target, Best Buy, Caribou, Starbucks..

So, although the latest additions have been disappointing, its not all bad, and there is still hope of something a bit more varied (no more discount or plus-sizes clothing, please..) and original coming. :-)
