The viewing and memorial service for Third District Sergeant Gerard W. Burke Jr. was held on Tuesday, March 28 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. A full honor guard ceremony followed the service. The funeral procession went through Columbia Heights and consisted of an entourage of white-gloved officers, a motorcade of patrol cars and motorcycles, and a helicopter flyby. Police officials also paid tribute to Sgt. Burke by playing an audiotape of his last call to the dispatcher through loudspeakers outside the church.
According to a post on the 3D Substation messageboard, the procession followed the following route:
"The procession will leave St. Patrick's Church, located at 619 10th Street, NW, going north on 10th Street, west on G Street, north on 11th Street, east on Lamont Street, north on Sherman Avenue, east on Park Road passing the Third District sub-station at 750 Park Road, NW, and disbanding at Georgia Avenue and Park Road, NW. The body will then be taken to the Reagan National Airport."
