Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

FedEx Kinko's     d'vines

Press Release From Donatelli Development

FedEx-Kinko's, d'vines Sign Up For Retail Space At Kenyon Square

Donatelli Development is proud to announce that two more retailers have signed up for space at Kenyon Square, bringing to seven the total number of committed retailers in the building. These two latest retailers promise to round out Kenyon Square's retail "menu," bringing products and services to Columbia Heights that have long been missing from the once-bustling 14th Street retail corridor.

FedEx/Kinko's Office and Print Services

FedEx Kinko'sColumbia Heights will be home to the first neighborhood FedEx-Kinko's store east of Rock Creek Park, offering a full range of printing, shipping and digital imaging services in a location that's far more convenient and accessible than the bulk of the retailer's other outlets. (Most FedEx-Kinko's outlets are concentrated downtown, with a few more sprinkled across Capitol Hill, Georgetown, Dupont Circle and upper Northwest.)

This is good news for consumers and small business owners from Mount Pleasant to Mount Vernon, of course, but better still for condo owners in Kenyon Square.

The 2,300 square foot store will offer a full range of products and services tailored to both small business owners and consumers, including:

  • copying, printing and digital imaging
  • technology services including laptop docking stations, wi-fi access, PC and Mac work stations loaded with the latest software, CD duplication and more
  • office supplies including toner, ink, papers and presentation materials
  • photo printing services such as enlargements, posters, personalized photo products (e.g. t-shirts, mugs, etc.), digital enhancements and adjustments, and printing direct from camera or digital media
  • shipping services including packing, shipping and tracking.

d'vines

Also coming to Columbia Heights for the first time is a locally-owned specialty wine and beer retailer, "d'vines."

For years, the neighborhood's oenophiles and beer-lovers have either had to trek to distant neighborhoods to purchase fine wines and artisan and craft beers, or settle for the selection at the corner liquor store. Sales of wine and beer at the Giant at Tivoli Square raised the bar a notch, but the neighborhood still lacks a store with a wide selection of wines and beers at the mid- to top end of the market, with a sales staff with the specialized knowledge to make highly tailored recommendations.

D'vines will change that, offering over 1000 wine labels and 240 varieties of artisan and craft beers (plus an exclusive selection of cigars), all hand-picked by the owners and managers, in an appealing and well-laid out, 1390-square-foot space in the southern half of the building.

de vinosKenyon Square condo buyers may vaguely recognize the name "d'vines." The new store will be managed by the same personnel as the one-year-old De Vinos, at 18th Street and Florida Avenue in Adams Morgan. Certainly when d'vines opens, those who have shopped for fine wine and craft beers at De Vinos will recognize the look (vintage, rustic and upscale) and appreciate the knowledgeable sales staff.

The combined effect, according to co-owner George Aguilar, will be that customers will be comfortable lingering, learning, and hopefully trying new things.

"We're very pleased to be offering home-grown businesses a unique chance to grow in a dynamic and rapidly changing neighborhood with a great customer base," stated Donatelli Development president Chris Donatelli. "Not only will the neighborhood benefit from the added service, but we salute local business owners with the foresight to invest in Columbia Heights."

For his part, d'vines co-owner Aguilar would like Kenyon Square owners to feel welcome in his store even before it's built. He plans to offer Kenyon Square residents an automatic ten percent discount at the new store, and invites Kenyon Square buyers to come visit him at Di Vinos on 18th Street. He said, "Come in, introduce yourself, let's get to know each other even before we're neighbors, and I'll gladly give you the d'vines Kenyon Square resident discount at Di Vinos!"

One Space Still Available

Donatelli Development is holding the final retail space, about 2,850 square feet located just to the south of Logan @ The Heights (which is at the corner of 14th and Kenyon), for an exceptional restaurant opportunity.

"We think grouping two high-quality restaurants together up near Kenyon Street will benefit both restaurants, and offer neighborhood residents a great choice in dining options," Donatelli stated. The developer has met with several interested parties, and welcomes additional inquiries from other local restaurateurs.

"If you have an all-time favorite restaurant, talk to the owners to see if they would be interested in looking at the Columbia Heights market," Donatelli continued, "and have them give us a call. We still have a little bit of time."

Not too much time, though; retail tenants are expected to begin opening their doors by the summer. Retail inquiries can be directed to John Asadoorian at Asadoorian Retail Solutions, (202) 333-9066.

Awesome, awesome news -- local wine/beer retailer was high on my wish list, personally, and I love that they are holding space for (hopefully) another non-chain restaurant.

Agree!!! The shop in Adams Morgan looks great. It should make a great addition to the neighborhood and hopefully will encourage other "types" of businesses. Hopefully, we've seen th last bank, mortgage company, cell phone store, check cashing shop, or fried chicken joint.

This is fantastic news. The wine shop will be a welcome addition, and I am glad they are considering resturants for the last space.

It looks like a lot of peoples' hopes are starting to come true here. I myself am extremely happy that businesses occupying a leisure niche are committing themselves to the neighborhood. Shopping is nice, but I've always wanted to increase the number of reasons to have my friends come hang out in my hood, rather than going to theirs. Leisure dining options and a few local upscale specialty stores are a great way to get that process started!

Other than the tacky name of the new wine store - fantastic news! And hey, even FedexKinko is ok, hated when had to drive really far once or twice to use their services.

I have enjoyed de vinos and their international selection of wines in Adams-Morgan. I will be thrilled to see them open in the new neighborhood!

The wine shops sounds fine, but don't we already have a UPS Copy Store that just opened up and is struggling to survive next to Ruby Tuesday's? I've heard folks mention say it is a shame there isn't more diversity in businesses opening up. How about a book or hardware! store!!!

Hardware store is coming - the folks that own Logan Hardware are scoping spots last I heard.
