Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights
Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area. Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market! More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights. Read more in the Retail News section.
We just received word from Ryan Youngman, the CEO of Ellwood Thompson's Local Market, that his company is scoping out retail space in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. This is extremely great news for those of us who were interested in Whole Foods Market, Trader Joes, and the like. Ellwood Thompson's is a natural market based in Richmond, Virginia. They offer the quality, organic products that you would find at Whole Foods but with a smaller, more intimate setting of Trader Joe's. Without further ado, here is what CEO Ryan Youngman had to say about his company and his interest in Columbia Heights:
My Name is Ryan Youngman and I operate a successful Natural Market in Richmond VA since 1988 that specializes in quality local produce, organic food and natural products. We have been searching for locations to open several stores in the DC area. We are represented by our broker from KLNB who specializes in retail for the DC area for the past 18 months.
Ellwood Thompson's operates a full service grocery store in the 10,000 to 15,000 square feet range. We just recently been focusing on the Columbia Heights area because we really like the diversity and density of the area and believe that people in this area would appreciate the unique experience our concept offers. We are committed to supporting local farmers, manufactures and other local merchants. ET would would gladly sponsor local farmers markets. Additionally we have a strong commitment to the environment and ideally would like to be in a "Leeds" certified or "Green" concept building.
Mr. Youngman has requested feedback from the community. His email address is:

With the chances of luring Whole Foods Market becoming more and more remote, it will be a refreshing change to write to a company who truly appreciates the tremendouse potential of Columbia Heights. Please write to Mr. Youngman to express your support. And please spread the word!
Written by James on 2007-11-11 11:43:29wow! ...this sounds very promising. This past year Whole Foods has been "going down". The quality and service are not what they used to be, and the P Street store no longer reigns as the best market around. Anyways, we need other big natural food retailers in the national market and i would be excited about supporting a store that can provide real compition for "Mr. Big"....in other words - this sounds even better then Whole Foods!
Would be nice to have you in Columbia He Written by
on 2008-03-07 16:12:58It would really be great to have a natural food store in the area. I normally go to Trader Joe's but it is a bit far away and i do not have a car. Sometimes i go to wholefoods but I often have to stand in line at the cash register for way too long (more than 15 minutes). Although Giant sells some organic produce--its customer service there is also not that good (i am always questioning the quality).
