Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights
Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area. Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market! More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights. Read more in the Retail News section.
We just received an update from Ryan Youngman, CEO of Ellwood Thompson's Local Market, concerning his company's interest in the DC USA location.
Ellwood Thompson's has been overwhelmed with support from Columbia Heights residents as well as others in DC's other outstanding communities. Thank you all very much! An update in our search is that we are currently very interested in the DC USA development nearing completion on 14th Ave. We encourage any support that the neighborhood's interested residents can provide??
We would like to explain our store concept a little clearer since there have been a lot of comparisons to other Natural Markets in the area. Ellwood Thompson's is a full-service Natural/Organic Market that does not sell any products that contain artificial flavors, colors or preservatives. Our products contain no hydrogenated oils, parabens, high fructose corn syrup or transfats.
The store is approximately 15,000 SF and we're stewards of local farming and merchants (often working directly with the farm). Quality is top priority and sampling is encouraged. We have a full-service meat case (free-range varieties) as well as a deli case/hot bar and a health and beauty section. I hope this information is helpful in providing a snapshot of what Ellwood's has to offer Columbia Heights. For additional information, please visit our soon-to-be redesigned website at http://www.ellwoodthompsons.com.
Many thanks,
Ryan Youngman CEO,
Ellwood Thompson's
Again, we encourage you to continuing writing CEO Ryan Youngman to voice your support for an Ellwood Thompson's location at DC USA and urging others to do as well. Again his email is:

We will keep you posted on this exciting development as we get more word.

Written by Tim on 2007-08-08 11:20:46I worked at this place during college in the 90s. It grew from a tiny city market to a mainstay in the city's west end that even the major grocery chains couldn't touch. It is THE place to get natural foods in Richmond. Similar to Whole Foods, but smaller and more accessible.
