Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

TargetTarget is set to open to the public on Wednesday at 8 AM at the DC USA retail complex, several  days ahead of schedule.  Apparently this will be a "soft" opening.  The grand opening is scheduled for this Sunday.  There has been a lot of buzz in the media surrounding this historic day for Columbia Heights and the District.  The following are some interesting articles from major media sources that cover the opening of the District's first Target and the impact it has made on Columbia Heights:

Target held a pre-opening event today which was attended by Mayor Adrian Fenty and Ward One Councilmember Jim Graham.  For photos of this event, please follow this link.

Michael Wilkinson of Windsor Consulting has also posted some photos of the event.

This interesting and good news: "The [Target] store is an average-size for Target but will offer an expanded line of groceries _ except for meat and produce."

I paid attention to that also. That means that they have been paying attention to the needs of the community and are smart to capitalize on the opportunity presented to them. We are the first to have this done I suppose. That’s good news. Can't wait to go in tomorrow and see how everything is.

I went last nite to the opening party and it was amazing! It is so big - it just doesn't look that large from the street, but once you are inside, it is massive. The grocery section is great. Will be so nice to have a place to go other than Giant.

I just went. It is impressive to say the least. Two big floor connected by escalators and lifts.

I must admit I had not appreciated how wide a selection Targets have during my maybe two visits to a Target before.

The groceries section (yes they have one) is quite extensive, but no fresh produce or meat/fish. Just the dry stuff, milk, eggs, cheese etc. etc. Still, quite handy to have. Pizza Hut Express and Starbucks inside the store as well.

The best thing about it was that it was still virtually empty... ahh the peace and quiet! Will change soon. Go while you still can without bumping into people

Marshall's seems almost ready to open, Best Buy and Bed Bath and Beyond slightly behind. Third floor (besided the Target part) seems to be almost if not fully devoted to the sports club.

I actually like the fact you cannot get into all the stores through the main foyer (as far as I could tell as of now). "Forces" people to the side walks, increasing foot traffic on the streets and making the whole are more lively!

I passed by Target after work, around 5 or so and it was packed. I was surprised at how many people there were considering its Wednesday.

One thing I did notice, too many teens, especially around the video game section. I wouldn't be surprised if that area becomes the hangout after school.
So many shoppers

I went into target tonight and it was like where is the stuff. People look like they came in and bought everything. Great job CH! I think other retailers will take notice of the buying power here in the 1st week sales
