Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

DC USA Opens

With the opening of the District's first Target, DC USA's doors were officially open to the public today.  This truly is a momentous occasion for Columbia Heights.  Considering that this was merely a "soft opening" for Target (the official grand opening is scheduled for this Sunday), DC USA was abuzz with many excited people this evening.  We couldn't help but notice the wonderment in people's eyes as they stepped inside DC USA for the first time -- that is, after we got past our own amazement.

When you walk through the main entrance off of 14th Street into DC USA, you are greeted by a magnificent tower of glass.  An escalator leads you up to the Target which is on the second and third floors.  Behind the escalator is a Marshalls that seems to be very close to opening.

Besides being on two floors, this Target location does not look much different from any other locations we have been to.  Its home furnishings and grocery departments do seem expanded when compared to other locations.  At 5pm there was quite a crowd inside Target.  When we left at around 7pm, with a cart full of merchandise, it seemed to have gotten even more crowded with a steady stream of people continuing to come up the escalators into Target.  There has already been a lot of coverage of Target's opening day through comments left by readers on this website (DC's First Target Opens Wednesday), our forum, and the media, so we will leave it at that.  DCist has posted several photos of Target, The Target is Open! The Target is Open!.

Below are some photos that we snapped of DC USA's interior:

Best Buy Opening Soon

Up to this point, we have not seen any photos of Best Buy's interior.  Its doors were open momentarily when we were there this evening so we took some quick photos.  We were informed by a representative that Best Buy will be opening at the end of this month.

The only other store aside from Target that was open at DC USA was Lane Bryant which fronts 14th Street on the ground floor.

Bike racks!
Written by on 2008-03-06 12:40:27
The place looks great, but when I stopped by last night I was dismayed to discover that there are absolutely no bike racks along the main facade of the building. While a few bikes managed to be locked to the couple of signs that exist, the lack of meters or additional signs means that once all the stores open, there's going to be absolutely no place for people to park their bikes.

Hopefully DDOT or the folks at DCUSA will rectify this problem soon.

Lee,

I had the same thought... If they are not installed within a few weeks, bike racks can be requested at the link below. I'd guess they just haven't gotten to it yet.

I need my bike.....

My plan was to balance my flat screen on my head as I steer my bike with one hand, eat lunch with the other and carry the toilet paper from target in a basket.

When you actually show up on the first day riding your bike and you can't lock it up properly, it's a little harder to be patient. ;-)

Mark is probably right, the bike racks are probably on their way, but I've seen bigger mistakes in planning made before. Especially when it comes to largely suburban stores and largely suburban developers; I don't put much past them.

Thanks for the link Mark, I'll put in a request.
