Major Retail Coming to Columbia Heights

DC USA

Columbia Heights is poised to become the shopping destination for the entire Washington, DC area.  Hundreds of thousands of square feet of retail space are in the works including DC USA, a 500,000 sq. ft. retail complex that will include major retailers such as Target, Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, and possibly Whole Foods Market!  More exciting retailers are planning to open in the newly renovated Tivoli Square and other developments across Columbia Heights.  Read more in the Retail News section.

DC USAWe have received an update on the retail tenants planned for the DC USA site.  According to Drew Greenwald, President of Grid Properties, Marshalls has signed on.  Caribou Coffee will be signing on in place of DC USA.  Greenwald noted that Starbucks "may open across the street."

There are also quite a few omissions from the retail tenant list that we previously reported.  Petco, Casual Male, Cingular, and Sun Trust are not expected to be tenants.  For the most up to date list of retailers that have signed on or are in negotiations, please visit our DC USA page.

How about LL Bean in place of Whole Foods?

With successful (yet distant from DC) retail in both Colubia, MD and Tysons Corner, I think they would find success in Columbia Heights. LL Bean is a high-quality brand and their products are beloved by many and would be a destination for the emerging buying demogtapic in DC. There is nothing like it in the District and would draw all those looking for the linbe of products offered by LL Bean. The scale of the Whole Foods site is highly compatible with the scale of LL Bean retail. It would be a flat-out moneymaker for the company and a coup for the city. LL Bean and DC - call them American!

I dont think that would work - the malls that LLBean is in - Columbia and Tysons - are both higher end malls. Columbia Heights isnt there yet.

I think Trader Joe's would be a fantastic addition to the C-Heights neighborhood if the Whole Foods deal doesn't go through. Heck, even if Whole Foods opens up, TJ's would be an excellent & less expensive alternative...Bring em in!
Traffic improvements needed

Any news yet on proposed traffic improvements in the area? If people are going to the grocery store and Target, they're going to be driving. I don't see how the tight network of roads in CH is going to support this. I forecast gridlock at rush hour.

I agree--bring on Trader Joe's!
what this neighborhood needs is...

what we need is a movie theater!!! i wish they had thought to include that in the project. it seems like a movie theater would be so great there. it used to be that you could go to a movie without driving across town. i also think the TIvoli would have been better for the neighborhood if it was restored to it' s original use - a movie theater. any chance of that?!?!

I would love having either a Trader Joes, Whole Foods--or both--nearby.
Trader Joes

Yes, Trader Joes would be a great addition to the CH area. I love our new Giant but a TJs would be even better. Great prices, great food, and great beverages...
Movies, how can we get that added to the

When I first bought in the CH area several years ago I was under the impression that we would get a movie theater at the new mall. I guess that has changed or I was misimformed. What can we do to make this happen? I am willing to get involved, a movie theater is an excellent idea.

I dont see there being any chance of a movie theatre in DCUSA - the large spaces are all leased, minus the grocery store part. There's a huge theatre 5 min away in Chinatown - why would they add one here?

I think all of the new development is a disaster. I used to eat at the Waffle Shop right off the corner of 14th and Park. I loved that little dive Salvadoran place. Now, I get to look at a bunch of chain stores?

I have nothing against development at all. In fact, I'd love to see the Heights bring in new businesses and more places to get food and other things. But, I was excited about places like Coffee on 11th.

Bed, Bath and Beyond is a nightmare. As if Ruby Tuesdays was not enough. Come on. I moved here to get out of the midwest strip malls. Columbia Heights is fast becoming another strip mall of anonymous chains and homogeneity.
