Washington, DC - The DC Council has unanimously passed two resolutions asking Mayor Williams to include Park Morton in his "New Communities" Initiative. Park Morton is a 174-unit public housing complex at Georgia Avenue and Morton Streets, NW.

The Council saw the unemployment, high crime, social needs and deteriorating buildings at Park Morton as cause for immediate action. The two resolutions passed yesterday, authored by Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One), ask the Mayor to use existing District resources to immediately start planning a New Community at Park Morton.

"I'm grateful that all of us saw the need to take action right away at Park Morton," said Councilmember Graham. "With the Mayor's help, we will invest in affordable housing and lift up an entire neighborhood."

New Communities makes a major investment in the housing and physical infrastructure of a neighborhood, while addressing social needs as well. It replaces affordable housing units one-for-one around improved public spaces such as libraries, schools and recreation centers.
