Councilmember Jim Graham Jim Graham has just announced that he will be running for reelection to his seat as DC Councilmember for Ward One, a position he has held since 1999.  The following is his complete reelection campaign announcement:

Jim Graham Announces Reelection Campaign

Ward One Council Member Says, "There's More Work to be Done."

Today I announce my candidacy for reelection to the DC Council from Ward One, the most diverse area in the District of Columbia. I am the only Ward councilmember seeking re-election this year.

Representing the residents of Ward One and serving all of DC is a great honor. I look forward to the months ahead and, as always, the lively and productive discussion of issues that campaigns inspire.

During my two terms on the Council, my staff and I have sought to improve the quality of life in Ward One by fighting to make our neighborhoods safer, strengthen schools, renovate libraries and keep our local economic engine running.  We have worked to preserve diversity while also welcoming newcomers into our neighborhoods. More than 3000 low income apartments have not only been preserved but have been rehabilitated along the 14th Street corridor. At the same time, new apartments and the largest retail center outside of downtown, have been, or are being built in the area of U Street and Columbia Heights...transforming, without moving a single person, what were previously chain linked fenced, vacant lots.

As Chair of the Committee on Consumer and Regulatory Affairs, I have fought to protect renters, as well as to preserve and create new, affordable housing units.  In these economic boom times, few issues are as critical toward safeguarding the great cultural diversity of our city.  I have also fought successfully to rid our neighborhoods of alcohol licenses that are a magnet for crime and violence.

Previously, as chair with oversight on DC property, I conducted a successful investigation into what was revealed to be--in 63 hours of hearings--a major scandal involving fraud, theft and unethical at the Office of Property Management. Major reforms as well as criminal and civil actions resulted from that investigation.

By all measures we have accomplished a great  deal in Ward One and throughout the city. Working  together we have made great progress over the past eight years, but there are many unfinished projects that need to be addressed.  That is why I seek reelection.
