Press Release from Councilmember Jim Graham Council Approves Graham Bill to Pave Way for New Organic Market in Columbia Heights
WASHINGTON, D.C.: The D.C. Council today passed emergency legislation introduced by Councilmember Jim Graham (D-Ward One) that will bring a new organic market from Richmond to the DC USA shopping center in Columbia Heights.
“This organic grocery store opens up a brand new option for shoppers,” Councilmember Graham said. “I’m glad we’ve cleared the way for it to happen.” The bill clarifies that property and sales tax incentives for full-service supermarkets should go to stores that are part of larger developments, not just standalone stores. The bill was co-introduced by Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward Two). The tax exemption lasts for 10 years as long as the stores continue to operate as full-service supermarkets.
