Help Bring Whole Foods Market To Columbia Heights!

Whole Foods MarketWould you like Whole Foods Market to come to Columbia Heights?  You can join our campaign to bring Whole Foods Market to the DC USA retail complex!  The best way for you to voice your support for Whole Foods is to email Karen Riley at karen.riley@wholefoods.com.  Karen Riley is the real estate coordinator for Whole Foods Market.  She can demonstrate the level of our support directly to the Whole Foods team working on the negotiations.  Please be as descriptive as you can in your emails.  Please also cc or bcc your emails to Ms. Riley to us at info@columbiaheightsnews.org.  We need to keep a running tally of how many messages have been sent to Whole Foods Market so we can gage how much more work we need to do.  The more people who can email Whole Foods Market the more powerful our collective voices will be!  It looks like we are facing an uphill battle but as a community we can make a difference!  Please spread the word!

The amount of retail space that DC USA is making available for Whole Foods Market is about 35,000 sq. ft., according to Marc Katz, the leasing agent from H&R Retail who is representing Whole Foods Market.  As we reported earlier, this is much less than the 60,000 sq. ft that Whole Foods Market is requiring.  If you look at the space that has been designated for Whole Foods, you can see that it has been divided into two levels.  The upper level seems to be roughly sixty percent the size of the ground level.  This would make the upper level about 13,000 sq. ft. while the ground level would be about 22,000 sq. ft.

Because at least eighty percent of DC USA retail space is under lease, the developers do not seem to have much flexibility to alter the layout significantly.  It would be especially hard to make the space larger.  If Whole Foods Market does deem the space inadequate for their operations, then the developers will be left with a vacant 35,000 sq. ft. space which is best configured to accomodate another grocery store.

Alternate Grocers

Trader Joe'sMany of you have suggested alternate organic grocery stores such as Trader Joe's, My Organic Market, and Yes! Organic Market.  The average size of a Trader Joe's store is 10,000 sq. ft.  A My Organic Market store is similar in size.  Yes! Organic Market locations are significantly smaller.  We are unaware of any locations for any of these grocers that approach 35,000 sq. ft.  If such grocers do come to DC USA, the current retail configuration for Whole Foods Market would have to be significantly altered.  We will try to determine if the DC USA developers would consider these other grocers if Whole Foods Market is completely out of the picture.

Continue Your Support

If bringing a high quality grocer to Columbia Heights is important to you, please continue to support the cause by contacting us and provide your suggestions and feedback.  Please also sign our Whole Foods petition.  We have received many email responses in regards to bringing Whole Foods to Columbia Heights.  We have compiled a list of excerpts from some of the emails that we have received.

We will continue to contact the various parties that are involved in the Whole Foods Market negotiations to gather more information and determine how we as a community can have the most impact.  We will try to ascertain what the developers' plans would be if Whole Foods Market ultimately decides not to come to DC USA.  Any new information that we receive will be reported here.  Please stay tuned.

I'm Stephen Royster . I'll be moving to Columbia Heights with in the next couple of weeks . I'm a professional in the cosmetic industry , that works between Washington , DC & NYC . I can see this area as the next Union Square as NYC , young , vibrant , ecclectic , and always changing. I feel in love with Whole Foods after shopping at the Union Square location on a regular basis. I belive that setting up a location here , would be benefitting for the area as terms as a place to shop , dine as well a place to work for the people thats already living there .I'll basicly be living a 5 minute walk from the shopping mall. The residents are definatly there to cater you guys , no wonder Trader Joes & Harris Teeter is coming , & already established Super Giant supermarket. So do us a Favor . Send us Whole Foods !!!!!
