Ben's Chili Bowl

A good way to combine a vigorous walk around Columbia Heights with a bite to eat is to head south down 13th street toward U street.  At the crest of Clifton, where the road dips, you can see the National monuments poking through southern neighborhoods and upon descending, if your sniffer is any good, you’ll begin to pick up the first wafts of the legendary DC Chili Bowl.

The history of all of the northern DC neighborhoods is reflected in the story of Ben and Virginia Ali and their collective will to keep their business running through thick and thin since 1958.  They have prevailed and enjoy a reputation that approaches folk heroes.  This history is well written-up on their website; take a minute to click through, read it and view the historic photos of U street.

As for the food, Ben’s Chili Bowl is a staple for quick lunchers and those on the go.  Three out of four people are ordering “half-smoke w/ chili” (aka Bill Cosby’s favorite and only $4.35).  Fries are another buck or two.  Sure, they have salads and tuna salad sandwiches, but why bother?  It’s a place to get messy with your dog.  I notice the regular contingent of customers from the Army bases usually wear their camouflage uniforms—an excellent fashion choice for the occasion.

As a bonus, if this hypothetical walk is on a warm afternoon (and it’s always noon somewhere), you might decide to chill your chili next door with a beer from the extended beer menu at “The Saloon.”  Or continue on, rounding the corner homeward at the Bohemian Caverns (stop to see what acts are scheduled on the board outside).  Eleventh street is a good CH-bound route because it’s less of an incline than 13th and it’ll put you closer to finishing up with another little drinky at Wonderland as your reward for mile(s) walked.

I'm a huge fan of Ben's. It's not the most exotic food out there, but it's a good, cheap, satisfying meal. Turkey burgers are great, they even have vegeterian chili. And don't forget about the pink cake.

Ben's Chili Bowl is overrated. Actually it should not be rated at all. The food is the nastiest. And the prices are HIGHEST. Have you heard of "SEASONING". Apparently they have not. The chili has no flavor. Heck nothing has any flavor. Dagg they could use Beef/Chicken Boullions. My main question is....How in the HELL can ARABS cook BEEF chili. For gods sake they are VEGETARIANS. How can an ARAB own Ben's Chili Bowl. Or is it BEN LADIN. Inquiring Minds Wanna Know.nullBen's Chili Bowl is overrated. Actually it should not be rated at all. The food is the nastiest. Hey Bigtee, please don't get discouraged. The comment below is a lone voice amongst many. Even though I don't visit Ben's often, I too see it as a wonderful place that survived so much for so long.

I've lived in D.C. all my life and can remember going to Ben's as a teenager with my friends. It was a treat for us because we were broke young ladies and going down to U Street was a big thing. I loved the half-smokes and fries and even thought I can't eat them like I used to - I still stop by every once in a whilte to give them some love and spend my money there.

For the person who wonders how can an Arab sell pork - Mr. Ali and his wife are originally from Trinidad and Tobago - so I don't think they identify as Arab. Caribbean people have very deep roots in the Caribbean culture so I'm sure Mr. Ali thinks of himself more as a Trini man that as an Arab man.

Some people are so spiteful and jealous - they want his location and will do any underhanded thing they can to disparage Ben's - if you don't like the food, there are several other places you can go as for me - I will continue to patronize Ben's - they are a D.C. institution!

Love the food, I hope Ben's lasts forever!
