Temptations of Temperance Hall

Jan 25, 2006
Lisa Simon
Columbia Heights Resident

For those who haven’t heard about Petworth’s good fortune, the new Temperance Hall bar and restaurant opened January 13th to what seems like uniformly rave reviews.

It’s a highly ambient space with low lights glowing through a pristine row of chandeliers, running the length of the box-car built row.  And these chandeliers (apparently a little something special from the creative minds at Brass Knob in Adams Morgan) capture the essence of Temperance Hall beautifully--traditional, but with a twist.  The bar is themed from the 1920s era, but it’s not the cloying nostalgia of thoughtlessly “themed” places.  Like the un-uniform colors sporadically placed in the chandeliers, Temperance adds a twist to the past—a nod to honor it, but a sure move toward the future.  A bit of history, a bit of whimsy, a lot of sparkle and charm.

If ambience isn’t reason enough to make Temperance your next place to eat, the food might.  The early menu is what one would expect from a neighborhood pub in the Capitol city—hearty American comfort food you can afford on a Tuesday night out.  Most folks won’t be able to eat here everyday (at least not those of us who cook…I’ve heard tale that some of you don’t, but I don’t understand how it’s possible). I believe most meals were under $10.  They all seemed appealing and included some vegetarian choices.

Dan, the attentive barkeep and manager, says that he’s soliciting help in shaping bar to the neighborhood’s taste.  Get your dibs in early for wines, microbrews, and booze.  Other temptations of Temperance: a pool table ($2 a game), internet jukebox, 2nd full bar downstairs, and rumored patio with outdoor seating for warmer weather.  This is a place doing everything right to become a neighborhood bar—a come-as-you-are and be who you are authentic pub.  Everyone who respects that effort should try it and then, once smitten, tell your ten closest friends.

I took my first visit to Temperance Hall this weekend and I loved the look and feel of the bar. My friends and I ordered a palte of fries for $2.50 which hit the spot perfectly. Paired with a couple of Yueng Lings (or a diet coke if you don't drink) and it definitely fit the bill of a neighborhood bar.

That said, I do have a few recommendations:
1. The Temperance Hall is not going to draw my friends and I out like a bar in Adams Morgan will and I am definitely going to need a $2.50 $3.00 beer option.
2. A pool table in the back is an excellent touch. My roommate and I would go weekly if it weren't $2.00.
3. Unless there is a major sporting event on, a steady stream of music in the background wouldn't hurt. At 50 cents a song, I can't afford to feed the jukebox for as long as I'd like to be there.

alls well, but 4$ for beer...PBR or Bud lite? that is extreme...

a great attempt, and very close to being a cool bar. food is bad to mediocre (do you have to put cinnamon in everything???). good selection of beer, but they should offer cheap beer for cheap prices, not cheap beer for good beer prices. pool table is uber tiny. shouldn't be $2/game.

Temperance Hall is AWESOME! Very clean, cosy, wonderful interior, cool selection of beers.. I only hope I did not have to jump over the litter/trash on Georgia Ave. when getting there... lol.. well, maybe it will clean up eventually.

And where in a decent clean bar do you get any beer much cheaper than $4? ;) I glably pay that or more to have a decent pub in our neighborhood!

"I am definitely going to need a $2.50 $3.00 beer option."
Where in DC do you find beer for $2.50 outside of happy hour? Maybe TH sets its pricing in order to avoid the sort of clientele that doesn't want to spend any money -- and probably not tip. Buy a six pack and stay home.

oooo...harsh.
Get over yourself.

I appreciate that TH is kept clean and has a wonderful interior but I don't think a $2.50 option for beer is unreasonable. They don't have to drop all the prices...just give me one.
Furthermore, I used to live off of tips and I don't need you telling me who tips well and who doesn't, especially when bad tippers are the yuppies who order expensive items and make up for it on the tip.

My point is this:
1. There's 1 pool table and at $2.00 a game, TH is not drawing a billiards crowd.
2. TH is located off the Georgia Av/Petworth station...no one's strolling around just to see what's new. TH has NOTHING around it. It's not a place where people are going to make an effort to go to. It's not a place where coworkers go after work.

So, it's obviously going the route of the neighborhood bar and a neighborhood bar should not be pricing people out. It should know the neighborhood it lives in and, at least, partially accomodate it.

But then again, I'm operating under the assumption that TH wants people to come. Maybe EAW likes going to empty bars.

Finally made it over to TH. Cool little place in the middle of shadyland on Georgia Ave. Food was pretty good - I had the sloppy joe and fries. There were a lot of other items on the menu that sounded good, so I will definitely be back.

Temperance Hall is such an awesome place, plunked right down in the middle of Petworth. I drive by daily to and from work (from Brightwood to Downtown) and stopped in one night after work and to my pleasure found they served Allgash White on tap. My favorite beer. Mmmmm! And don't get me started on those beautiful garlic fries. The jukebox is great, but needs to be somewhere else.

I had hoped to have a holiday happy hour here but despite leaving 2 voicemails and sending an e-mail, no one ever returned my call. Grrrr.

I'll definately be a regular here.
Very nice

Great ambience and atmosphere. The menu was a bit limited and odd (including a couple random salad options, Angus hot dog, sloppy joes?), but we all liked what we ordered (BLT, fish sandwich, etc). Food is reasonably priced although the drinks are a tad over. The waiters were nice and very accomodating. Did I mention it has a great ambience? Overall I'd highly recommend trying it!
