Markette Smith-SheppardWASHINGTON -- Markette Smith-Sheppard is Mrs. District of Columbia– America 2008 and not since "The Apprentice" bad girl Omarosa held the title OF "Mrs. District of Columbia" has a beauty queen taken our nation's capital by storm! She was crowned Thursday evening in Frederick, Md. at the official preliminary to the nationally televised Mrs. America pageant.

But Markette says she wants to use her new found title for good and has no interest in being on a reality show. Instead, she's used the pageant to raise money to help build playgrounds in "child rich, playground poor" communities nationwide.

"I feel so privileged and humbled to have the opportunity to give back to my community as Mrs. District of Columbia America 2008. And no, I have no interest in following in Omarosa's footsteps into reality TV, but it would be cool to someday co-host the Today Show," says the first time beauty queen.

This was Markette's first pageant ever. She says she was stunned, honored and humbled when she was crowned the winner by Capitol Hill staffer Susan Sweat, Mrs. Dictrict of Columbia American 2007. A six-year resident of the District and a graduate of American University, Markette works as a reporter at a leading Washington news station. Her husband, Damon Sheppard, is a local architect and Howard University graduate. He shares his excitement for the beauty queen of the fastest-growing area of the city.

Markette will compete for the national title of Mrs. America in Tucson, Arizona on September 2.

TV personality Dr. Alduan Tartt, author of "The Ring Formula: How to Marry Mr. Right" is the official sponsor of Mrs. District of Columbia – America 2008.
