Some of you may have noticed the pick up in construction activity at Meridian Hill Park in the past several months. The National Park Service has been renovating the park since 2003 and is expected to finish the renovations in Spring 2008. It is currently in the second phase of the two-phase renovation project.
A Columbia Heights resident was kind enough to bring this renovation project to our attention. Thanks John.
"Meridian Hill Park is currently undergoing a major renovation that will be completed this Spring. They are making repairs to get the fountains and cascade flowing again, as well as make some structural repairs, improve drainage, plant some new trees and restore the historic police lodge on the mall level. Police will be posted there and the restrooms and drinking fountains will be functioning again. (and given how much they've torn up the grass on the playing fields of the mall, I'm guessing that they'll fully replace that grass too)."
John also provided an update he received from the Rock Creek Park Superintendent describing this project:
Phase I work, which took place primarily on the park's lower level, involved the replacement of the park's 80 year old piping and electrical systems. These systems needed to be replaced in order for the fountains and electrical components in the park to function, including the park's major feature, the cascade. Phase I work also included structural repairs to the park's historic concrete features, such as walls, walkways and stairs. Benches on the upper level were also replaced.
We are now into Phase II on the upper level. As of this writing, Phase II work is 35% complete and on schedule. Please see previous email for a description of the work involved. The fields will be out of commission until Spring 2008 because of the need to put in water lines; correct drainage problems, install an irrigation system, all of which require the fields to be closed. Most recently, we've been working with DC to get a Public Space permit which is needed so that we can tap into the city storm water line. We've also been workng with WASA to get a storm water permit so that we can put in a storm water tie at Euclid Street. This work will begin as soon as we receive the required permits. In the meantime, we're working on the lodge house.
We realize that construction work causes inconveniences. But these temporary inconveniences will result in long term improvements for the park.
